FINE

We all know what that stands for, right? I shall say no more. Tomorrow I am calling my sponsor. I am working too hard and not thinking very clearly.

My friend said today early in recovery he heard someone say, "We have no hope for a better past." I guess that means we should live in today.

In Narcotics Anonymous, the only promise is freedom from active addiction. I think sometimes we sold ourselves short by not cadging AA's promises, but I was apparently outvoted in that matter. Oh yeah, I wasn't here to vote.

As for the promises in my life, the one that I still haven't achieved is, "We shall not regret the past nor wish to shut the door on it."

I went to three meetings today. What does that say?

Until I blog again, stay clean. It is the softer, easier way.

We may not be able to make a better past for ourselves, but we can view it through sober eyes.

I think not regretting the past and not shutting the door on it are hard. The past isn't isolated events - they shape who we are. All that unwinding and disconnecting and making healthy new associations is hard work. And even then, there's likely going to be parts of us we will want to retain from our past that sometimes carry less pleasant memories. We don't get a clean slate when we get sober, but I think learning from the past is a pretty cool thing in the right perspective and attitude. If I get there, that is.

.. That reminds me of something I heard in my own early recovery. The "Frank Sinatra Method of Recovery".

.. No, my past is there for me to draw upon as prime examples of what not to do today. My recovery is just the same. Past experiences traveling thru recovery are also there for me to learn from.

Regrets, I've had a few
But then again, too few to mention

I heard a speaker say on Saturday that he didn't like to look at his past. It was not a place that he liked to dwell. I have been over my past. there is nothing that I can do to change it. All I can do is learn from it and accept it and do my best and God's will today. Hang in there.
