Dog arrested, fans howl

As more people than care to know, Duane "Dog" Chapman the Bounty Hunter, that mullet-wearing Hawaiian hunk (not) was arrested by U.S. Marshalls in Hawaii along with his son and Timothy Chapman last Thursday. They allegedly "kidnapped" convicted rapist and Max Factor heir Andrew Luster in Mexico in 2003. Luster fled California after he was convicted of raping three women using GHB, known as a "date rape" drug.

Allegedly, Dog and his kin (or is it pack?) were partying in Puerto Vallarta in 2003 when they recognized Luster and kidnapped him. Local police in Mexico then took them all into custody and Dog posted bond but he and pack members failed to return to Mexico for a hearing. Three years later, a Federal judge signed a warrant for Dog and friends and the police kicked in his door. He has since been released on a $300,000 bond.

As fond as I am of dogs, it amazed me that so many people are blogging and commenting on this issue. There are hundreds and hundreds of comments on blogs and articles proclaiming allegiance to Dog and his family, mullet, white trash outfits and all.

Here's my thoughts. Yes, capturing a rapist is a great thing. But breaking the law in any country, well, not so great. And failing to appear for his court hearing after posting bond? Dog, you should know better.

Here is a comment from the ‘more than you wanted to know about Duane Chapman’ department. I was interested in the story mainly because Luster was cruising clubs in Santa Barbara, where I live, on the theory that UCSB students are 'easy'. I believe it was another couple vacationing in Puerto Vallarta that contacted Dog after spotting Luster at their hotel. Like all bounty hunters, Dog was competing for reward money ..which he didn’t want to lose to Mexican authorities ..or the FBI. Given the difference between the Mexican and U.S. judicial system ..well, I guess I can kind of understand his decision not to return for a hearing.

By the way, I'm not a Doug Chapman fan either ..but I do have sympathy for bounty hunters ..and for US citizens languishing in Mexican jails.

I love his show. It's on A&E tonite at 10 p.m. here in AZ. Check your listings if you are interested. I'm going to watch to get the whole story. I agree that he shouldn't have missed the court date, however, from what I understand he was working with police in Mexico and then they turned on him. He was also told by his atty at the time that his arrest/charges were a misdemeaner. Let's chat tomorrow after the show.

Looks like some people have nothing more productive to do with their time than to watch this Bozo's tv show.
